Koh Lanta
Such an easy trip from Krabi to Koh Lanta compared to previous overnighters and rickety buses! We got there within 3 hours and bus dropped us straight to our lodgings 'Sanctuary', right on the beach, little bamboo huts with a porch and hammock, bongo bar, yoga platform and chill out areas. Stunning, such a nice vibe to it and felt like we were getting a real Thailand by the beach experience! It was located along 'Long Beach' which is indeed very long, we walked down along beautiful resorts and shack bars, what a I really liked about it is that the beach is backdropped by forests.
We watched the sunset at the Bongo Bar with a Chang, we were so chilled, so chilled Daniel fell asleep!
Booked ourselves in for some snorkelling the next day!
SO it was fantastic! Real highlight so far.
1st stop was a reef where we jumped in and snorkelled for a bit.....well I tried! It was my first time and I didn't fully trust breathing in without engulfing a load of seawater so I just swam around until it must have looked like I was drowning as the captain of the boat was signalling for me to get a lifejacket......'Drag me in Daniel'!!!!!!!! He duly obliged! 'Ill wear a lifejacket with you next time babe'.....I blame the currents, they were awful strong!!
2nd stop was a cave. I nearly died when I saw it, it was a cliff with a small dark opening. There was no way I was backing out, kids were doing it!
So lifejacket securely on, we all tucked in behind our guide into the dark. (Daniel offered up his lifejacket to a father who was nearly drowning holding his child, Sweetie!) He had a flashlight attached to his head. Going through the cave was GAS! Everyone fighting their way through the water in darkness fighting to be up top beside the light. Kicking everyone as we went!
It then opened up into a lagoon which literally took our breath away. I think my exact quote was 'this is the most beautiful thing ive ever seen'....but I do say that a lot! A small beach, crystal water like a bath and trees, butterflies framed it. So enchanting!
Worth doing the trip for this alone!
They then brought us to a beautiful island called Koh Ngai. We didn't have enough time there at all didn't want to leave!
For dinner that night we just grabbed a pizza from a kiosk on side of the road, while we waited we played with her two kids, was a lovely interaction and they were just playing with toy cars and books and pencils. So simple, no need for ipads here!
Popped into a bar called Sixtens for a nightcap. We met 3 lovely lads, divers who were living here while becoming trainers. Had a good laugh with them and a few games of pool.
Next day we rented a scooter and toured the island.
Found some more cracking beaches and trekked through forests to a waterfall, which was hilarious, everyone queuing up for their photo op under it, then promptly leaving!!
Really sad moment as we were driving down the road. A baby monkey had been obviously knocked down in the middle of the road and all the family surrounded it while the mother tried to wake it up. Heartbreaking!
Also noticed the air smells amazing here, because there are so many trees, flowers and oxygen, in parts, the air smells like perfume!!
As I was writing this I was on the porch of our hut while Daniel pretended not to be asleep with pen and crossword book positioned very cleverly to deter....I started to think, jaysus hes really struggling with that crossword!!!!
We had the bike the next day too and explored the north of the island. On our travels we stopped off at a running track which fascinated Daniel, location was pretty cracking, surrounded by mountains and forests! Daniel let me have a round on the scooter, my first time. Once I figured out how to 'balance' it I was away at what I thought was fierce speed, I actually thought 'hes gonna go mad now Im going so fast'!!
Fear not Daniel had thankfully recorded me and laughed hysterically throughout at my 'super slow' lap!! Ah well better safe than sorry.
Bit of a thunderstorm that night, and being in a wooden hut, I was quite panicked! I gave Daniel the 'its time for that zanex' look and he knew! So I was quickly knocked out!
We had planned to go from here to Phi Phi where 'The Beach' was filmed but weather reports weren't hopeful and we didn't want to risk getting stuck on an island with a flight to Chiang mai from Krabi on Wednesday! So we decided to go back to Krabi for a few nights!
Visited Hong islands, we had booked a longtail but there was some problem with it so we were upgraded to a speed boat! bloody nice one!!
We sat right up front with loads of room and comfort. Daniel felt like he was in a Calvin Harris music video!
Time for some more snorkelling, I wore the lifejacket this time just so I could focus on using the equipment. After some coaching from Daniel, I set off with snorkel and was transfixed following the fish and reef. Really enjoyed it! Vistied two island beaches that are usually hidden when tide is high so that was really nice! Hong island was our last stop. Its a national park so you have to pay 300THB to enter which is about 8e! This island was also devastated by the 2004 tsunami and remains of some of the boats washed up are still there as a reminder of the force of it.
We spent a lovely 2 hours there, lazing on the beach and strolling through the nature trail. It was very hot so we spent a lot of it like hippos in the water!!
Sun hit us hard once wed got back so chilled for the evening and got ourselves sorted for Chiang Mai.
Heard only good things about it, so we are looking forward to it!
Apologies for all the photos its a way to safely save them!
