Fuzhou, China
We arrived to China after a long day of travelling, a stopover in Guangzhour and then onward to Xiamen. We had an overnight stay booked in Xiamen and planned to move on to Fuzhour the next day. As we arrived to the airport we figured out we needed to get a shuttle to the train station that was close to our hostel.
The information desk were reluctant to help us and didn't speak much English. We eventually showed a picture of the train station and asked for a ticket. We arrived at the train station and got on our 'Maps.me' app to find our hostel. It showed us that we were a 9hr walk away!! Wed only gone and got off at the wrong station! So back on the train to the right one! Trying to find the hostel after a LONG day of travelling was less than fun! Carrying heavy bags traipsing back and forth trying to follow the app finally became futile and I stopped dead in my tracks and declared 'OK, im fed up of this!'
We gave up on the idea of finding our accommodation and asked the information desk for a hotel close and for a good price. She didn't want to help us and when Daniel asked her if she could use the computer (0h yeh we couldn't connect to any wifi!) she looked blankly at him and said 'Its off', ( it wasn't off!!).
Daniel ran off to find some help! He came back with accommodation sorted, I didn't care what or who it was, it was progress!!
So we were put into a car and taken to a block of apartments on the side of the road, led up in a lift covered in graffiti. Again, the guy leading us to our 'Hotel Room' didn't speak English, I repeatedly asked him 'Is this a hotel' and he just laughed and said yes yes! (not much reassurance!!)
As we went to step out of the lift Daniel advised me to stay in the lift 'just in case'.
Seemed ok so we proceeded. Room was surprisingly nice and I for one was quite relieved. Daniel asked said man to call his friend Eddie who we were travelling here to see, just to make sure all was legit. (at least someone knew where we were!!) We honestly thought we were going to become organ harvested!!
As we settled in for the night and were just about relaxed there was a loud continuous bang on the door (this was it!!) Daniel braced himself and cautiously opened it, I cowered under the duvet! As he looked out a guy at the next door looked at him quizzically and proceeded into his room!
We were ok!!
The next morning we were collected at 11 and brought back to the train station to head to Fuzhou!
When we arrived to Fuzhou train station an hour later we headed towards the taxi rank, but before we could enter, there was a barricade of two police officers and one plain clothes man. one of the police officers was banging a baton against his palm and staring at us. They told us to go with the plain clothes guy, we were not allowed to get a taxi! Freaked, we obliged and followed him to his car! Surprisingly he took us to Eddies bar! The Chinese love to freak out the tourists!
When we arrived and met Eddie we breathed a deep sigh of relief and demanded a coffee followed by a cold beer!! The beer continued then for the next few days!! We decided to head off then to Shanghai to detox for a few days!.....TBC
(photos are all over the place and mixed so just...yeh!)
